Cogworld
[OVERVIEW]
This elearning concept design was developed to explain the use of gamification in online learning. The learner has the opportunity to discover different game mechanics which can be used to influence and improve participation. To mimic a real game, this design uses elements of story-telling throughout to add further depth to the experience. I have also opted for a character-lead game style for the purpose of carrying dialogue and the story over the duration of the course.
[ASSET DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT]
This design uses typical side-scrolling platform game elements to make up the levels. To give the game its own flavour, I opted for a steam-punk style aesthetic which blends in with the concept of cogs, pulleys, pistons and other machine parts. This type of aesthetic style also lends itself to the idea of a game’s inner workings which is essentially gamification as a subject area.
The original character design was created using Affinity Designer on the iPad pro and then moved over to Adobe Illustrator to be included with the new game assets on a series of art-boards. These game sprites were exported as .png files and imported into Articulate 360 for final development.
[ANIMATED GIFS]
This Coggler is the main antagonist in the game and represents the concept of “Risk”. The character design was originally created in Adobe Illustrator, animated in After Effects and then exported as a .GIF file which could then be imported into Articulate 360. This process allowed me to create more complex character movements within the authoring tool.
[COURSE SCREEN-SHOTS]
Once imported into Articulate 360, I could work on the interactive aspects of each screen including the character behaviours, hot-spots and triggers.
